A group of optical illusions that affect the perceived contrast of images and colors.

Humans tend to perceive identical colors differently if they are next to different colors.
Two identical grey dots will have different lightnesses (perceived luminance) if placed on black or white backgrounds.
Similarly, if a grey dot is on a yellow background, it will look darker than if it was on a blue background of the same [[brightness]].
